    Question

Speed of a boat in still water is 1.5 times the upstream

speed of the boat. The boat takes 5 hours less to cover (D) km distance in downstream than in upstream. Find the total time taken by the boat to cover (D) km distance in upstream and downstream.
A 10 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 12 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 15 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 18 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E 20 hours Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    Let the upstream speed of the boat = (u) km/h Speed of boat in still water = 1.5u km/h We know, Speed in still water = {{Upstream speed} + {Downstream speed}}/2 So, {u + d}/2 = 1.5u or, u + d = 3u or, d = 2u Upstream time = D/u Downstream time = D/2u Given, {D/u} - {D/2u} = 5 D( {1/2u} = 5 D/u = 10 Total time = (D/u) + (D/2u) = 10 + 5 = 15 hrs
