The ratio of the speed of the boat in still water to

the speed of the stream is 5 : 1. If the speed of the boat is increased by 40%, then the time taken to cover 288 km downstream is 12 hours. Find the speed of the boat in still water.
    A 18 km/hr Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    B 15 km/hr Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    C 12 km/hr Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    D 20 km/hr Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E None of these Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ, Let, the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the stream is 5x km/hr and x km/hr. The speed of the boat in still water after increased = 5x * 140/100 = 7x km/hr So, downstream speed after increase = (7x + x) = 8x km/hr 8x = 288/12 8x = 24 x = 3 The speed of the boat in still water = 5 * 3 = 15 km/hr
