Question
Upstream speed of a boat is 22 km/h. Time taken by boat to
cover 144 km downstream is 1 hour more than that taken by it to cover 77 km upstream. Speed of a ship is 9 km/h more than that of the boat. Find the time taken (in minutes) by ship to cover 162 km in still water.Solution
Let the downstream speed of boat be 'D' km/h.
(144/D) = (77/22) + 1
Or, (144/D) = 3.5 + 1
Or, (144/D) = 4.5
Or, 'D' = 144 ÷ 4.5 = 32
Speed of boat = (32 + 22) ÷ 2 = 27 km/h
Speed of ship = 27 + 9 = 36 km/h
Required time = (162/36) = 4.5 hours = 4.5 X 60 = 270 minutes
