In a mixture of wine and water, there is only 28% water. After replacing the mixture with 5 litre of pure wine, the percentage of wine in the mixture becomes 74%. Find the quantity of new mixture?

Let the quantity of the original mixture be x litres. Percentage of water = 28% So, percentage of wine = 72% Quantity of wine in the original mixture = 72% of x = 0.72x litres Now, 5 litres of mixture is replaced with 5 litres of pure wine. Wine removed from 5 litres of mixture = 72% of 5 = 3.6 litres Wine added = 5 litres So, quantity of wine in the new mixture = 0.72x – 3.6 + 5 = 0.72x + 1.4 According to the question, Percentage of wine in the new mixture = 74% So, 0.72x + 1.4 = 0.74x Or, 1.4 = 0.74x – 0.72x Or, 1.4 = 0.02x So, x = 1.4 ÷ 0.02 = 70 Therefore, the quantity of new mixture = 70 litres.
