Question
Five years from now, the sum of the ages of ‘X’ and
‘Y’ will be 50 years. Ten years ago, ‘X’ was 8 years younger than ‘Y’. What will be the age of ‘Y’ two years from now?Solution
ATQ,
Let present ages be:
X = p
Y = q
Condition 1:
(p + 5) + (q + 5) = 50
⇒ p + q = 40 ——— (i)
Condition 2:
p - 10 = q - 10 - 8
⇒ p = q - 8 ——— (ii)
Substitute (ii) in (i):
(q - 8) + q = 40
2q = 48
q = 24
Required age of Y = 24 + 2 = 26 years
