The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 establishes uniform standards of weights and measures and regulates their use in trade and commerce, including the mandatory declaration of quantity and price on packaged commodities. Its object is consumer protection through accurate measurement and truthful labelling under the provision of Section 2 and the rules framed thereunder. It replaced the earlier Standards of Weights and Measures legislation. It does not fix commodity prices, regulate food safety, or govern data protection, which fall to separate statutes and authorities. Contraventions attract the pecuniary penalties and, in some cases, imprisonment the Act prescribes.
