For the first time under the Code on Social Security, 2020, which category of workers has been formally recognised and brought under social security coverage?

One of the most landmark features of the Code on Social Security, 2020 is the  formal recognition and inclusion of gig workers and platform workers  within the social security framework for the very first time in Indian labour legislation. A  gig worker  is defined as a person who performs work or participates in a work arrangement outside the traditional employer-employee relationship, while a  platform worker  is one who accesses organisations or individuals through an online platform to provide services. Under the Code,  aggregators  such as ride-sharing apps (Ola, Uber), food delivery platforms (Zomato, Swiggy) may be required to contribute between  1% to 2% of their annual turnover  to a Social Security Fund for such workers, capped at 5%. The Code also provides for the establishment of a  National Social Security Board  to recommend and monitor schemes for unorganised workers, gig workers, and platform workers, marking a significant step toward  universal social security coverage  in India.
