The Industrial Relations Code, 2020 is one of the  four labour codes  enacted by Parliament to consolidate and simplify India's fragmented labour legislation. It specifically subsumes three pre-existing laws: the  Industrial Disputes Act, 1947  (which governed procedures for resolving industrial disputes), the  Trade Unions Act, 1926  (which regulated registration and functioning of trade unions), and the  Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946  (which required employers to define and certify conditions of employment). The  Minimum Wages Act, 1948  and  Equal Remuneration Act, 1976  are subsumed under the  Code on Wages, 2019 , not this code.
