The Gondwana rock system represents the most recent major geological formation in India. These formations are particularly notable for containing substantial high-grade coal deposits, including valuable bituminous coal reserves. Chronologically, Gondwana rocks were formed significantly later than the Vindhyan sequence. The Dharwar formations, characterized by metallic mineral deposits (gold, iron, manganese, etc.), and the Cuddapah system (containing limestone, sandstone, and clay deposits) both predate the Gondwana system.
