"Jana Gana Mana," India's National Anthem, was first sung at the Kolkata (then Calcutta) session of the Indian National Congress on December 27, 1911. Composed by Rabindranath Tagore in highly Sanskritized Bengali, it was later officially adopted as the National Anthem of India on January 24, 1950. The 1911 session is historically significant for this cultural milestone, whereas the other sessions are known for different events, such as the Lucknow Pact (1916) and the Surat Split (1907).
