The revolt was compelled by the famine of 1770 and the harsh economic condition under the British. A group of Sanyasis in Eastern India stood up to fight the British yoke. They fought the forces of the company, raided its factories and the treasuries. Only a continued action by Warren Hastings, could subdue the sanyasis. The revolt also referred to as Fakir rebellion had equal participation of Hindus and Muslims.
