The field was found in 1974, started producing in 1976, and is run by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The Russian and Indian crew working aboard the seismic exploration vessel Academic Arkhangelsky made the discovery of the Mumbai High field in February 1974 while exploring the Gulf of Cambay between 1964 and 1967.
