Due to p ersistent demands for  reverting back to Old Pension Scheme OPS , the government established a committee in 2023 led by  T V Somanathan . The recommendations of the committee have led to the introduction of the new  Unified Pension Scheme UPS which was approved by the government to be effective from April 01, 2025.       The scheme will be effective from 1st  April, 2025 with central government employees shifting to UPS from the current National Pension System NPS.    State governments will also have the option to adopt the Unified Pension Scheme. Choice, once exercised, will be final.    Provisions of UPS will also apply to past retirees of NPS who have already superannuated.
