A The Government’s decision to begin the COVID-19 immunisation programme for children between 12 and 14 years is welcome as a part of India’s efforts to extend coverage to the school-going population, but it also raises some concerns. True, protein subunit vaccines are generally considered safe for all age groups, but that cannot be a reason to begin vaccinating young children first. So, showing urgency is ineffective and the government should do proper research and testing before it is given to children.
B There are different types of disease presentation based on the age of the person who is infected by this virus. Luckily, children and adolescents tend to have more mild disease compared to adults. Most people who are infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have respiratory symptoms. They start to feel a little bit unwell, they will have a fever, they may have a cough or a sore throat or sneeze. In some individuals, they may have gastrointestinal symptoms. Others may lose the sense of smell or the sense of taste
C Under the country’s immunisation drive, 75 per cent children belonging to the 15-18 age group have received Covid vaccine doses and among adults, the first dose coverage was 96 per cent, while 77 per cent adult Indians were fully vaccinated. Lauding the nationwide inoculation drive, the Union minister said the country has been able to effectively use vaccination in its fight against the pandemic.
D The FDA has given emergency use authorization to a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for the age group 12-15. This vaccine involves two shots. The second dose can be given three to eight weeks after the first dose. It contains the same dose as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 16 and older. Research has shown that this vaccine is 100% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children ages 12 through 15.
