सन् 1960 में भारत सरकार के तत्कालीन शिक्षा एवं समाज कल्याण मंत्रालय द्वारा केंद्रीय हिंदी संस्थान की स्थापना उत्तर प्रदेश के आगरा शहर में की गई। केंद्रीय हिंदी संस्थान का मुख्यालय आगरा में है। मुख्यालय के अतिरिक्त इसके 8 केंद्र हैं -दिल्ली, हैदराबाद, गुवाहाटी, शिलांग, मैसूर, दीमापुर, भुवनेश्वर और अहमदाबाद। केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेन्द्र प्रधान ने हिंदी सस्थान के शिलांग केंद्र का 2021 में उद्घाटन किया।
