List of Regional Rural Banks: Important Topic for Bank Exams

In India, Regional Rural Banks are commercial banks that operate in rural areas across the country. IBPS is in charge of administering the exam for Officers and Office Assistants in different RRBs. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection is one of the largest banking sector organizations in the world, and it is the body that administers the IBPS RRB exam throughout the country.

Regional Rural Banks

The Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) were established in 1975 under the provisions of the Ordinance promulgated on September 26, 1975, and the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976, with the purpose of improving the rural economy by providing credit and other facilities, especially to small businesses, for the development of agriculture, trade, commerce, industry, and other productive activities in rural areas.

RRB History

At least 25 RRBs in various parts of India were created within a year of the Act’s implementation. First RRB,the Prathama Bank,Head Office at Moradabad (U.P.), sponsored by Syndicate Bank. One was Set up at Malda in West Bengal under the name of Gaur Gramin Bank,(Sponsored Bank:UCO Bank) which was the first RRB in the Eastern Region of India. Other three RRBs are Gorakhpur Kshetriya Gramin Bank, Gorakhpur, U.P. (Sponsored Bank:SBI), Haryana Kshetriya Gramin Bank Bhiwani, Haryana (Sponsored Bank:PNB), Jaipur-Nagpur Anchalik Gramin Bank Jaipur, Rajasthan (Sponsored Bank:UCO Bank).

The Regional Rural Banks were founded with the aim of developing banking institutions that could also serve as commercial enterprises in rural areas.

The Objectives of Regional Rural Banks

In light of the Act’s preamble, RRBs’ objectives and activities can be summarised as follows:

RRBs offer financial assistance to various segments of the rural population engaged in rural activities in order to achieve these goals.

Area of Functioning of Regional Rural Banks

Regional Rural Banks are expected to operate within a specific geographic area for which they have been founded. Typically, each RRB’s functional area is limited to a few districts within the state in which it is established. The central government, in consultation with NABARD and the Sponsor Banks, determines the region in which RRBs will operate through a notification. Since RRBs are also allowed to open branches or appoint agencies within their designated areas, it is appropriate for them to locate their Head Office in the central location of their notified area of operation.

Sponsorship of Regional Rural Banks

A Public Sector Bank sponsors each Regional Rural Bank. In the case of a Regional Rural Bank, a sponsor bank is a financial institution that supports the RRB. It is the responsibility of a sponsor bank to aid and support the RRB that it sponsors.
