Question
Some students have lined up facing front in a queue to
enter an auditorium. Rahul stands 10th from the left and Suman is 5th from the right. If they interchange their places, Suman would be 19th from the right. How many students are there in the queue?Solution
Let the total number of students be N. Rahul's original position: 10th from left. Suman's original position: 5th from right, so her position from left = (N - 5 + 1) = (N - 4). After interchange: Suman takes Rahul's position, which is 10th from the left. This new position is given as 19th from the right. So, from the left, it is (N - 19 + 1) = (N - 18). Therefore, 10 = N - 18 => N = 10 + 18 = 28.
