Question
A train with 16 compartments of equal length takes 32
seconds to cross a pole and 40 seconds to cross a 160-metre-long platform. If 8 compartments are removed, then how long would it take to cross a pole?Solution
Let the original length of the train = ‘d’ metres
Then, distance covered by the train in 32 seconds = ‘d’ metres
Distance covered by the train in 40 seconds = (d + 160) metres
So, distance covered in (40 – 32) = 8 seconds = (d + 160 – d) = 160 metres
So, speed of the train = 160 ÷ 8 = 20 m/s
So, original length of the train = 20 × 32 = 640 metres
After removing 8 compartments, length of the train = 640 × (8/16) = 320 metres
So, required time taken = 320 ÷ 20 = 16 seconds
