Question
A police man goes after a thief who has 100m start. If
the policeman runs a KM in 8 min and the thief runs a km in 10 min, how far will the thief have gone before he is overtaken?Solution
Speed of policeman = 1km/8min = 1km/(8/60) = 7.5 kmph Speed of thief = 1km/ (10min) = 1km/(10/60) = 6kmph So time = Distance /speed = 100m /(7.5-6)kmph = 0.1km/ 1.5kmph = 1/15 hrs = 4min Distance travelled by theif in 4min = 6kmph x 4min = 6 x 5/18 x 4 x 60 m = 400m & he has also start of 100m, so total distance travelled by thief till he overtook by policeman= 100m+400m = 500m
