Question
Train P starts from Lucknow to Dehradun at 11:55 am with
an average speed of 16.5 m/s. Train Q starts from Dehradun to Lucknow at 1:35 pm with an average speed of 11.5 m/s. At what time the two trains will meet each other if the distance between Lucknow and Dehradun is 555 Km.Solution
Speed of train P = 16.5 × 18/5 = 59.4 Km/h Speed of train Q = 11.5 × 18/5 = 41.4 Km/h Distance travelled by train P till 1:35 pm = 59.4 × 5/3 = 99 Km Relative speed of trains = 59.4 + 41.4 = 100.8 Km/h Remaining distance to be travelled after 1:35 pm = 555 – 99 = 456 Km Time taken to cover 456 Km = 456/100.8 = 9/2 = 4 hours 30 minutes So the two trains will meet each other at 1:35 + 4:30 = 6:05 pm
