    Question

    (i) x² – 3x – 40 = 0 (ii) y² + 11y + 30 =

    0 In each of these questions, two equations (i) and (ii) are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answers:
    A if x > y Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    B if x ≥ y Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    C if x = y or no relation can be established between x and y. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    D if y > x Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    E if y ≥ x Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    (i) x² – 3x – 40 = 0 => x² – 8x + 5x – 40 = 0 => x (x – 8) + 5(x – 8) = 0 => (x – 8) (x + 5) = 0 => x = 8, -5 (ii) y² + 11y + 30 = 0 => y² + 6y + 5y + 30 = 0 => y (y + 6) + 5 (y + 6) =0 => (y + 5) (y + 6) =0 => y = -6, – 5 Hence, x ≥ y.
