Let, the total population be 100x Number of females = 100x × 0.40 = 40x Number of males = 100x – 40x = 60x Literate male in the village = 60x × 0.60 = 36x Or, 36x = 1440 Or, x = 40 Total population = 4000 Literate females in the village = 1440 × (3/4) = 1080 Illiterate people in the village = 4000 – 1440 – 1080 = 1480 Percentage of illiterate people = (1480/4000) × 100 = 37%
