The sum of two numbers, x and y, is 640. If x is reduced by
8% and y is raised by 12%, the two values become equal. Determine the value of y.Solution

x + y = 640 ……(i)
ATQ,
0.92 × x = 1.12 × y
Or, x = (1.12/0.92) × y
So, x = (28y/23)
Put the value of ‘x’ in equation (i), we get,
(28y/23) + y = 640
Or, (51y/23) = 640
Or, y = 640 × (23/51)
So, y = 288
