Question

In a university examination, the passing marks are set at

50%. Marks obtained by ‘X’ are 12% less than the passing marks, and ‘Y’ scores 30% marks less than X. What percent less (up to 2 decimal places) than the sum of X’s and Y’s marks should Z obtain to pass the exam at the borderline?
A 38.27% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 20.25% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 33.16% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 42.86% Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ,

Let the maximum marks = 100x

    Passing marks = 50x

    X’s score = (50x)(1 – 0.12) = 44x

    Y’s score = (44x)(1 – 0.30) = 30.8x

    Sum of the scores of ‘X’ and ‘Y’ = 44x + 30.8x = 74.8x

    Required percentage = {(74.8x – 50x)/74.8x} × 100 = 33.16%
