Question
The arithmetic mean of two values βaβ and βbβ is
16, and their geometric mean is 10β2. Find the positive difference between the numbers, given that b > a.Solution
ATQ,
According to question;
m + n = 13 Γ 2 = 26
And, β(mn) = 6β5
Squaring both sides we get;
m Γ n = 36 Γ 5 = 180
Or, n(26 β n) = 180
Or, nΒ² β 26n + 180 = 0
Or, nΒ² β 16n β 10n + 180 = 0
Or, n(n β 16) β 10(n β 16) = 0
Or, (n β 10)(n β 16) = 0
Or, n = 10 (not valid) or n = 16
So, m = 26 β 16 = 10
So, the difference = 16 β 10 = 6
