Question
A container holds 160 litres of a solution containing sugar
and water in the ratio 3:5. How many litres of sugar should be added to make the new ratio 4:5?Solution
ATQ,
Sugar = (3/8) Γ 160 = 60 litres
Water = (5/8) Γ 160 = 100 litres
Let the amount of sugar to be added be x litres
Then, (60 + x) : 100 = 4 : 5
So, 60 + x = (4/5) Γ 100 = 80
x = 80 - 60 = 20 litres
