Question
A launch moves 50 km upstream and 180 km downstream in a combined time of 11 hours. The still-water speed of the launch is 10 km/h faster than the stream. Find the stream speed.
Solution
Let the speed of the stream = x And the speed of the boat in still water = x + 10 50/(x + 10 β x) + 180/(x + 10 + x) = 11 50/10 + 180/(2x + 10) = 11 5 + 180/(2x + 10) = 11 180/(2x + 10) = 6 2x + 10 = 180/6 2x + 10 = 30 2x = 20 x = 10 The speed of the stream = 10 km/hr
