Question
Sumit can swim 12 km upstream and 16 km downstream in 5
hours. If ratio of speed of stream to that of speed of Sumit in upstream is 1:2, then find the speed of Sumit in still water.Solution
Let speed of stream be x km/hr. And upstream speed of Sumit is 2x km/hr. Downstream speed = 2x + x + x = 4x km/hr => 12/2x + 16/4x = 5 ----- (i) => x = 2 Speed of Sumit in still water = (4x + 2x)/2 = 6x/2 = 12/2 = 6 km/hr
