Question
The average weight of a family of 5 members is 60 kg. If
the youngest member dies, the average weight of the family decreases by 2 kg. Find the weight of the person who died.Solution
Let the weight of the person who died be ‘x’ kg. So, Total weight of the 5 members = 5 × 60 = 300 kg When the youngest member dies, the average weight of the remaining 4 members = 60 - 2 = 58 kg Total weight of the 4 remaining members = 58 × 4 = 232 kg Now, the total weight after the death of the youngest member is the sum of the remaining 4 members’ weights plus the weight of the person who died. So, x + 232 = 300 x = 300 - 232 x = 68 kg Thus, the weight of the person who died is 68 kg.
