Question
Eight years ago, the ratio of Raman's age to Chaman's
age was 4:5. Twelve years from now, this ratio will change to 13:15. Calculate the current average age of Raman and Chaman based on these ratios.Solution
Let the ages of Raman and Chaman eight years ago were 4x years and 5x years respectively. So the present ages of Raman and Chaman are 4x + 8 years and 5x + 8 years respectively. According to question: (4x + 8 + 12)/(5x + 8 + 12) = 13/15 (4x + 20)/(5x + 20) = 13/15 60x + 300 = 65x + 260 5x = 40, x = 8 So the present ages of Raman and Chaman are 40 years and 48 years respectively. So the present average age of Raman and Chaman = (40 + 48)/4 = 44 years
