Under Section 103(1)(a), where non-compliance or contravention has resulted in an accident causing death, the offender is punishable with imprisonment up to two years, or a fine of not less than five lakh rupees, or both. Where it causes serious bodily injury, Section 103(1)(b) provides imprisonment up to one year or a fine of not less than two lakh rupees but not exceeding four lakh rupees, or both. The court may direct that at least fifty per cent of the fine be given as compensation to the victim or the legal heirs.
