A manufacturers' packaged food product is sold in retail without declaring NET QUANTITY or the MAXIMUM RETAIL PRICE on the package. Under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009:

Section 18 read with the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 mandates that every PRE-PACKAGED commodity shall bear the prescribed declaration of NET QUANTITY, MAXIMUM RETAIL PRICE, the manufacturer's/packer's name and address, and the month and year of manufacture/import. Selling a pre-packaged commodity without these declarations is an OFFENCE under the Act, and both the manufacturer/packer and the seller are amenable to the penalties prescribed. The declaration regime protects consumers from under-filled, over-priced or opaque packaging. Contravention of the declaration requirement is therefore actionable, not a mere suggestion.
