The Code on Social Security, 2020 (Act No. 36 of 2020) consolidates  nine pre-existing social security laws  into a single unified framework. These nine laws include the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952; Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948; Employees' Compensation Act, 1923; Maternity Benefit Act, 1961; Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972; Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Cess Act, 1996; Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act, 2008; Employment Exchanges (Compulsory Notification of Vacancies) Act, 1959; and the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. The  Industrial Disputes Act, 1947  is not covered under this Code it is subsumed under the  Industrial Relations Code, 2020 . A key distinguishing feature of this Code is that it extends social security coverage for the  first time to gig workers and platform workers , such as ride-sharing and food delivery workers.
