    Application of the Act  Who Does This Act Apply To? •Hindus (including different sects like Virashaivas, Lingayats, Brahmo, Prarthana, and Arya Samaj followers). •Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs. •Any other person living in India who is not a Muslim, Christian, Parsi, or Jew, unless they can prove that Hindu law or customs would not have applied to them if this Act had not been passed.  Who is Considered a Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, or Sikh? •A child (legitimate or illegitimate) whose both parents follow these religions. •A child with one parent following these religions, if raised in that religious community. •A convert or re-convert to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, or Sikhism.  Exceptions: •The Act does not apply to Scheduled Tribes unless the Central Government issues a notification stating otherwise.  Broad Meaning of "Hindu": •In this Act, “Hindu” includes anyone to whom the Act applies, even if they are not Hindu by religion.
