Section 2(d) of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 provides that when, at the desire of the promisor, the promisee or any other person has done or abstained from doing, or does or abstains from doing, or promises to do or to abstain from doing, something, such act or abstinence or promise is called a consideration for the promise. The words 'or any other person' establish that consideration may move from a stranger to the promise and need not be furnished by the promisee himself. This is the foundation of the rule that consideration may flow from a third party, although the doctrine of privity restricts who may actually sue upon the promise. The promisor cannot furnish his own consideration, and the court does not supply it, so the other options misstate section 2(d).
