Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 enables registration of an e-FIR by providing that information about the commission of a cognizable offence may be given to a police officer by electronic communication. Where the information is transmitted electronically, the officer in charge of the police station must sign it within three days of its transmission; if the informant fails to comply, the information is treated as a zero FIR and forwarded to the concerned police station or an entry is made in the station diary. This ensures that electronically furnished complaints are converted into signed records without loss of time. Twenty-four hours, forty-eight hours, seven days and fifteen days are accordingly incorrect, three days being the statutory period.
