Under Section 2(d), the term 'bank' includes all of the following EXCEPT:

Section 2(d) defines 'bank' to include: (i) a banking company; (ii) a corresponding new bank; (iii) State Bank of India; (iv) a subsidiary bank; (v) a Regional Rural Bank; and (vi) a multi-State co-operative bank (added by Act 1 of 2013). NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) is NOT included in the definition of 'bank' under Section 2(d). NABARD may qualify as a 'financial institution' under Section 2(h). The distinction between 'bank' and 'financial institution' is important because the same application procedures apply to both, but the entities differ. NABARD's exclusion from the definition of 'bank' is a frequently tested point.
