A hard link is essentially a second directory entry that points directly to the very same underlying inode (the actual data and metadata) as the original file — the two names are indistinguishable at the filesystem level, and the data persists as long as at least one hard link to it still exists. A symbolic link, by contrast, is a genuinely separate, small file that simply stores a path string pointing to the target file or directory; if the original file is deleted or moved without updating the symlink, the symbolic link becomes a 'broken' link pointing nowhere. This also means a hard link would NOT automatically track a rename correctly in the way option C implies (renaming and relinking are different operations), and hard links (unlike symbolic links) generally cannot span across different filesystems or reference directories in most standard configurations.
