The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) is the component of the CPU that performs all arithmetic operations (such as addition and subtraction) and logical operations (such as AND, OR, and comparisons) on the data it is given. Temporary storage during execution is handled by registers, fetching instructions from memory is handled by the Control Unit's instruction-fetch logic, managing I/O devices is handled by I/O controllers, and generating clock timing signals is the job of the system clock/oscillator — none of which is the ALU's role.
