Tamil Nadu has now the maximum no . of Ramsar sites ( 14 nos ) , followed by UP which has 10 nos . of Ramsar sites .

The Ramsar convention is an intergovernmental environmental treaty that was established by UNESCO on February 2, 1971 which came into force in 1975
The convention got its name from Ramsar city in Iran on the Caspian Sea, where the treaty was signed .

India signed it on 1st Feb 1982 .
