The Synchronised Vulture Survey-2025, which covered Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, revealed a steady increase in vulture populations across these states. The survey recorded a total of 390 vultures in 2024-2025, up from 320 the previous year. Tamil Nadu led with 157 vultures, followed by Kerala with 125 and Karnataka with 108. In Tamil Nadu, the white-rumped vulture was the most abundant species with 110 individuals, followed by the long-billed vulture (31), the red-headed vulture (11), and the Egyptian vulture (5). The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu is home to a significant breeding population of vultures and recorded the first red-headed vulture nest in southern India.
