The concept of the Uniform Civil Code (UCis enshrined in Article 44 of Part IV of the Indian Constitution as a Directive Principle of State Policy. This article stipulates that "the state shall endeavor to secure a uniform civil code for citizens throughout the territory of India." The UCC refers to a single set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession for all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation. Recently, Gujarat announced plans to become the second state after Uttarakhand to implement the UCC. A committee led by former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai has been tasked with drafting the UCC for Gujarat, with an extended deadline of April 15, 2025, for receiving public input.
