Eastern India's first astronomical observatory was inaugurated in January 2025 at Garpanchkot in the Purulia district of West Bengal. Located atop Panchet Hill, the observatory was established by the Department of Science and Technology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. It is named after Satyendra Nath Bose, the renowned physicist known for his contributions to quantum mechanics and Bose-Einstein statistics.
