The day was initiated by UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS) to promote equality and inclusion for everyone, regardless of their background, and to highlight the need to end discrimination in all forms. The theme for 2025 is "We Stand Together." The day was inspired by the Zero Discrimination Campaign launched on World AIDS Day in December 2013 and was first observed on March 1, 2014.
