Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) to develop clean coal technologies and diversify coal utilization methods. Under this partnership, CIL will establish a Center of Clean Coal Energy & Net Zero (CLEANZ) in Hyderabad. The collaboration aims to develop advanced technology readiness levels (TRL) for sustainable utilization of Indian coal, aligning with India's net zero commitments. This research and development initiative operates under the National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER), an independent R&D unit of CMPDI, which is CIL's mine development and consultancy arm. CIL has approved a grant of Rs 98 crore to IIT Hyderabad for a five-year period to establish this center of excellence. The clean coal technologies being explored include methods to improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) or carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS).
