Plants bend toward light (phototropism) because of the uneven distribution of auxin, a plant hormone. When light strikes a plant, auxins move away from the illuminated side to the shaded side. The higher concentration of auxins on the shaded side causes those cells to elongate more than cells on the illuminated side, resulting in the plant bending toward the light source.
