The University Grants Commission has instructed all higher education institutions to observe a ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Divas’ on December 11 as it marks the birth anniversary of poet Subramania Bharati, a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry. Subramania Bharati wrote songs to stimulate patriotism during the Independence movement. The day is to create “language harmony" and a supportive atmosphere for learning Indian languages. The central government will also be establishing 22 Bhasha Kendras (language centres) to promote Indian languages. About The UGC Founded: 1956 Headquarters: New Delhi Chairperson: D. P. Singh
