PMJDY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana) is India's national mission for financial inclusion, launched in 2014, aiming to provide universal access to basic financial services like bank accounts, credit, remittances, insurance, and pensions for every unbanked household, using zero-balance accounts, RuPay debit cards with insurance, and promoting direct benefit transfers The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) overdraft (OD) facility allows eligible account holders to withdraw up to ₹10,000 in emergency funds, even with a zero balance. This short-term credit, often aimed at one earning member per household (preferably a woman), requires a satisfactorily operated account for at least six months. It also provides accident Insurance Cover of up to Rs. 2 lakh to new PMJDY accounts opened after 28.8.2018, available with RuPay card issued to the PMJDY account holders. As per the Economic survey of 2025-26, PMJDY has opened 55.02 crore accounts as of March 2025. The rural-semi-urban share is indeed around 67%. While women's participation is high and central to the scheme, the actual share of female account holders stands at approximately 55.6%.
