    told is used when two people are mentioned in the reporting speech told is converted to said in the direct speech. In the indirect speech of Wh-question “Wh” is followed by the subject and then verb but in the direct speech the verb follows the Wh question. I is converted to you Indirect speech  always undergoes a reverse backshift in tense and so was doing    which is in past continuous  tense will be converted into are doing  which is in the   present Continuous tense.
