Current Status (2025 Report): In the latest report titled "A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI", India's rank improved to 130th out of 193 countries. This marks a significant climb of three positions compared to the previous reporting cycle.   HDI Value and Category:

• HDI Value: India's HDI score increased from 0.676 (in 2022) to 0.685 (in 2023).
• Category: India remains in the "Medium Human Development" category, though it is steadily approaching the threshold for "High Human Development" (HDI \geq 0.700).

• Health (Life Expectancy): Life expectancy at birth in India rose to 72.0 years , the highest since the index began in 1990.
• Education: Children in India are now expected to stay in school for 13 years on average.
• Standard of Living (Income): India’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita rose to 9,046 (based on 2021 PPP).

• Above India: China (78th), Sri Lanka (89th), and Bhutan (125th).
• Same as India: Bangladesh (130th).
• Below India: Nepal (145th) and Pakistan (168th).

• In the 2023-24 Report (based on 2022 data), India was ranked 134th .
• In the 2021-22 Report , India was ranked 132nd .
